Caring for those sandals: the complete guide

Summer is the peak season for sandals: we slip them on as soon as the sun comes out, whether it's for a stroll by the sea, a day at the office, or an evening on the terrace. But frequent use also means rapid wear, dust, marks, odors... To keep your favorite sandals in perfect condition all summer long (and beyond), here's a complete, simple, and effective care guide.

1. Clean regularly according to the material

Leather sandals

  • Dust your sandals with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush.
  • Clean with a special leather wax or mild soap and lukewarm water, without ever saturating the leather with water.
  • Moisturize with a nourishing leather cream to prevent cracking and maintain suppleness.
Tip : Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, which can dry out and dull the leather.

Nubuck or suede sandals

  • Use a brush or a special suede eraser to gently remove stains.
  • For more stubborn stains, a liquid cleaner suitable for nubuck can be applied cautiously.
  • Waterproof regularly with a waterproofing spray to prevent moisture and stains.

2. Prevent bad odors

  • Sandals worn barefoot can quickly accumulate heat and sweat.
  • Sprinkle baking soda inside and let it sit overnight before brushing.
  • Use specific deodorizing or antibacterial sprays for shoes.

3. Protect the sole and straps

Check the condition of the outsole regularly. If it is worn or smooth, have it fitted or replaced by a shoemaker. For fragile straps , avoid sudden movements and tighten them carefully. If your sandals are made of rope or straw, avoid puddles, as moisture can deform the sole.
